About Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic

Brian ShultzOur dear friend, Brian Schultz, passed away after a brief and sudden battle with cancer at the age of 27. Our memories of him have never faded and in fact grow stronger in large part due to the annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic. Each year this tournament gives participants the opportunity to share fond stories of Brian while creating new friendships and unforgettable memories, in addition to raising funds to put an end to this deadly disease.

“Brian loved golf and introduced many of his friends to the sport,” said Doug Gans, one of Schultz’s close friends and an organizer of the event. “A golf tournament seemed like the most fitting way to honor his memory, while supporting the fight to cure cancer.”

Now in its 21st year, the Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic has raised nearly $1 million to support cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region.

“We appreciate the generosity of our dedicated event donors and sponsors,” said Scott Lippman, MD, Director of Moores Cancer Center. “Support from the Brian Schultz Golf Classic helps fuel innovative research and advancements that ultimately translate into more effective treatments for patients battling cancer.”

A portion of the proceeds from the golf classic will fund the Brian Schultz Memorial Scholarship at San Diego State University — Schultz’s alma mater — which provides financial aid for students whose lives have been adversely affected by cancer. To date, 18 deserving students have been able to pursue higher education thanks to this event and the scholarship.

The golf classic kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with registration, a putting contest and a box lunch; the tournament officially tees-off at noon. Following tournament play, the evening will close with an awards banquet, silent and live auctions, and live entertainment and dancing. Children of attendees are invited to join in the fun with arts and crafts, games, Wii gaming stations, a pizza dinner and movies at the Kids Club.

Player entry fees start at $215 (rates increase on May 1). This includes 18 holes of tournament golf, a seat the banquet, a golf shirt and much more. Banquet-only tickets are available for $60; Kids Club tickets are $50.
